In a commercial kitchen or bar, fruit flies are more than a nuisance β they're a sanitation red flag that inspectors, health officers and customers all notice. Why commercial premises attract them
Restaurants and bars offer fruit flies everything they want at scale: constant sugary spills, warm rooms, high-volume waste, and dozens of damp, hard-to-clean nooks. Because a fruit fly develops from egg to adult in only about a week in a warm kitchen, a single overlooked breeding spot behind a bar can sustain a rolling swarm indefinitely. The visible flies over the fruit garnish or the bin are just the surface β the real population is developing in film and residue out of sight, which is why finding the breeding source is the whole game in a commercial setting.
Drains and floor drains: the number-one source
In commercial premises, drains are usually the prime suspect. Kitchen floor drains, bar drains and the drain under a glass-washer accumulate a rich organic film β food particles, sugar, alcohol residue β that fruit flies and their close relatives, drain flies and phorid flies, all breed in. Because these drains are used constantly and cleaned rarely, they sustain enormous populations.

- Follow with an enzyme or bio-based drain cleaner designed to digest the organic gel.
