Fruit flies are creatures of warmth. Their whole life runs on heat: eggs hatch faster, larvae grow quicker, and adults breed more when the kitchen is warm. Turn that against them. Cooling your food, chilling the room, and keeping air moving are quiet, chemical-free ways to grind an infestation to a halt — and they cost you almost nothing.

Why temperature is such a powerful lever
The complete journey from egg to adult takes roughly 8–10 days at about 25°C (77°F). Warm the kitchen and that clock speeds up; cool it and the clock slows dramatically. Below the low teens Celsius, development crawls, adults become sluggish, and females lay far fewer eggs. You are not necessarily killing the flies outright — you are stalling their reproduction so your other efforts can catch up. The speed at which fruit flies multiply is the whole reason a swarm appears so suddenly, and cold is the brake on that engine.

Refrigerate the fruit — the single best cold trick
Ripe fruit on the counter is a fruit fly magnet and a breeding site rolled into one. Move it into the fridge and two things happen at once: the cold slows the fermentation that draws flies in, and it halts the development of any eggs already laid on the skin. A closed fridge is also a physical barrier the flies cannot cross.
Do this today: Clear the fruit bowl into the fridge for a week. Removing the main attractant often does more, faster, than any spray — and the fruit keeps longer too.
Some fruit does dull in flavour when chilled — bananas darken, and very cold berries lose a little aroma — but during an active infestation the trade-off is worth it. The freezer: a quiet larvae killer
The freezer is your finishing move for anything you suspect is harbouring eggs or larvae. A few hours at freezing temperatures reliably kills the immature stages that traps and sprays never reach.
- Freeze suspect produce. A bag of fruit you are unsure about, or peelings destined for compost, can go in the freezer for a few hours before disposal to make sure nothing hatches later.
- Freeze the compost caddy. Keep kitchen scraps in a lidded tub in the freezer between trips to the outdoor bin, so they never ferment on your counter.
- Freeze a vacuum bag. After vacuuming a swarm, pop the bag or canister contents in the freezer to kill anything still alive before you empty it.

Airflow: make the room hard to live in
Fruit flies are feeble fliers. They move in short hovering hops and cannot make much headway against a steady breeze. A moving column of air disrupts the still, warm, scented pockets where they gather and makes it hard for them to home in on food or on a mate.
- Point a fan across the fruit bowl, the bin, or a doorway to keep flies from settling there.
- Open opposite windows to create a cross-draught that flushes warm, fragrant air out of the kitchen.
- Run the extractor hood while cooking and for a while after, to clear fermenting food smells.
- Keep the kitchen cooler overall — a lower room temperature slows breeding across the board.
Tip: A fan near an open window doubles as a gentle escort — sluggish flies drifting in the airflow are nudged toward the exit rather than toward your food.
Cool rooms as long-term storage
Temperature is not just a crisis tool — it shapes where an infestation can take hold in the first place. A naturally cool larder, a cold garage, or a basement pantry is a far less hospitable place for fruit flies than a warm kitchen counter, simply because breeding stalls at low temperatures. If you have somewhere cool to keep fruit, potatoes, onions, and open bottles, you deny the flies both the warmth and the fermenting food they need.
The catch is that cool does not mean damp. A chilly but humid basement can still host flies if there is standing water or rotting produce, so keep cool storage areas dry as well as cold. Where a cool room is not available, the fridge does the same job in miniature. This is the everyday version of the crisis tactic: instead of chilling fruit only during an outbreak, make cool, dry storage your default and outbreaks become far rarer. A little planning around where produce lives turns this into a lasting habit.
Cold and airflow are supporters, not soloists
Be realistic about the limits. Cooling and ventilation slow the flies and thin their numbers, but they do not remove the sticky drain film or the forgotten potato where the colony actually breeds. Temperature buys you time and calm; it does not clean your kitchen. Used alone, the swarm will linger.
