Some of those uses are genuinely helpful; others are wishful. Peroxide can rinse eggs off produce and kill larvae in soil on contact, but it does not reliably strip the biofilm inside a drain, and it is no substitute for finding the source. Where it falls short: the drain myth

The most common advice is to pour hydrogen peroxide down a drain to kill fruit flies, and this is where honesty is needed. Fruit flies and their look-alike drain flies breed in the biofilm — a slick, clinging gel of food residue and bacteria coating the inside of the pipe. Peroxide poured in fizzes on contact and rushes straight past, breaking down within seconds. It does not have the dwell time or the mechanical action to lift that stubborn film off the pipe wall, so the larvae sheltering deep in the gel largely survive. Like bleach, it treats the symptom on the surface, not the biofilm itself.

What actually removes drain biofilm is physical: a stiff drain brush scrubbing the pipe wall, a kettle of boiling water, and an enzyme or biofilm drain cleaner that digests the organic gel over hours. That combination reaches and removes the nursery in a way a fizzing rinse cannot. Don't rely on it for drains: A peroxide pour may knock back a little surface slime, but it will not clear a biofilm-based infestation. Scrub the drain mechanically and finish with an enzyme cleaner.

  4. Protect skin, eyes and plants. Avoid splashing it in eyes, and spot-test one plant before drenching all of them, as too-strong a mix can harm roots.
