Why a vase of flowers breeds flies

Fruit flies do not need fruit — they need fermentation and soft, decaying organic matter to feed and lay in, and old vase water delivers both. Cut stems leak sugars and sap into the water. Any leaves left below the surface begin to rot within a day or two. And most bouquets come with a sachet of flower food, which is largely sugar; dissolved and left to warm, it ferments just like the syrup at the bottom of a soda can. Within a few days the water is a cloudy, faintly sour broth — a smell a passing fruit fly reads as an open invitation.

Once adults are drawn in, the vase gives them everything they need to breed. The moist film around the rim, the decaying leaf litter and the surface of the water are all places a female will lay, and larvae can develop in the sludge and slime that builds up inside the glass. Flowers or houseplants — which flies are these?

Flies around plants and flowers cause constant confusion, and it pays to be sure before you act. Shutting the vase source down

  1. Empty and refresh the water. Change it every one to two days, tipping the old water down a running drain. Fresh water alone removes most of the fermenting broth the flies are tracking.
  2. Strip the lower leaves. Remove any foliage that would sit below the waterline before you arrange the stems, so nothing rots underwater.

  4. Recut the stems and go easy on flower food. A fresh cut keeps flowers drinking; use only the recommended amount of flower food, since excess sugar simply feeds fermentation.
  5. Bin spent arrangements promptly. When a bouquet is clearly fading, do not leave it to rot. Bag it and take it to an outdoor bin, and pour the water away rather than leaving it standing.

Caution: Floral foam cannot be rinsed clean — once it has held decaying stems it stays a breeding bed. Bin the whole block with the spent flowers rather than trying to reuse it.
