What a fruit fly looks like

Fruit flies are genuinely tiny — about 2 to 4 millimetres long, or roughly an eighth of an inch. The body is tan, honey-coloured or yellow-brown, and the eyes are the giveaway: most individuals have vivid, brick-red eyes that stand out under good light. Why they are called vinegar flies

The second name — vinegar fly — captures how these insects find your kitchen. They are exquisitely tuned to the smell of fermentation. As fruit ripens and then rots, yeasts convert its sugars into alcohol and acetic acid, the very compounds that make vinegar smell like vinegar.   1. They hitched a ride in. Fruit flies and their eggs travel on produce from the shop, garden or farmers' market. Grapes, bananas, tomatoes and stone fruit can carry microscopic eggs on the skin, which hatch once the fruit sits warm on your counter.
  2. They found a food source and bred. A forgotten potato, a sticky recycling bin, a splash of juice under the fridge, or the film inside a rarely used drain can each host a generation. Adults lay eggs there, and a week later you have a swarm that appears to have come from nowhere.

Are fruit flies dangerous?

For the most part, no. Fruit flies are a nuisance rather than a genuine health threat. They have no biting mouthparts — just a soft sponging proboscis — so they cannot bite you, and they are not established carriers of major human diseases the way house flies or mosquitoes are. That said, an insect that moves between a drain, rotting matter and your fruit can mechanically pick up and deposit bacteria, so ordinary hygiene is worth keeping.
