Fruit flies undergo complete metamorphosis, meaning the young look nothing like the adults. A larva is a tiny legless maggot that eats and grows; the adult is the winged, red-eyed insect you recognise. Between them sits a pupa, a still capsule inside which the body is rebuilt. The four stages — egg, larva, pupa, adult — follow one another in a tight, predictable sequence, and at warm room temperature the whole run takes roughly eight to ten days. Stage 1 — The egg

Everything starts when a female lays her eggs on or just below the surface of fermenting material: a bruise on an apple, the film in a drain, damp organic residue. The eggs are minute, under half a millimetre, and easily overlooked. Each egg carries two tiny breathing filaments that keep it from drowning in the moist, semi-liquid food the larva will need.

Hatching is fast — often within a day at warm temperatures. Because the eggs sit right on the food supply, the larvae start eating the moment they emerge. Stage 2 — The larva and its three instars

The larval stage is the growing phase, and it passes through three steps called instars, separated by moults. A first-instar larva is barely visible; by the third instar it is a plump, pale, comma-shaped maggot a few millimetres long, tunnelling through soft, rotting food.

  1. First instar. The freshly hatched larva feeds on yeast and microbes in the fermenting material and grows quickly.
  2. Second instar. After moulting, it eats more voraciously, still buried in its food source and rarely seen.
  3. Third instar. Now at full size, it crawls away from the wettest food toward a slightly drier spot to pupate.

Caution: The larvae are the part you almost never see, yet they are where the future swarm lives. A trap catches adults but does nothing to the maggots developing in the bin or drain — which is why trapping alone so often disappoints.

Stage 3 — The pupa

When the third-instar larva is ready, it stops eating and forms a pupa. Its outer skin hardens into a small, dark, oval case, often tucked against a dry edge of the food source, a crack in the bin, or nearby. Inside this quiet capsule the larval body is dismantled and rebuilt into the adult — wings, legs, red eyes and all. The pupa does not move or feed; from the outside it looks like a lifeless brown grain.

This stealthy stage is one reason infestations can seem to restart after you thought you had won. You clear the visible flies, but a batch of pupae is quietly maturing out of sight, ready to release a fresh wave of adults a few days later. Stage 4 — The adult

The adult emerges from the pupal case soft and pale, then darkens and firms up within hours. Remarkably, females can begin mating within a day or so and start laying eggs shortly after — restarting the whole cycle before the previous generation has even died off. A single female may lay several hundred eggs across her roughly two-week life.

How temperature bends the timeline

The "8 to 10 days" figure assumes comfortable indoor warmth of around 25°C (77°F). Temperature is the throttle. Push warmer and development accelerates; cool things down and every stage stretches out. In a cold pantry or during winter, the same cycle can take weeks, and near-freezing conditions can stall or kill the young entirely.

Why the short cycle changes your strategy
