How the garden feeds an indoor problem
Indoors, a single overripe banana can seed a swarm. Outdoors, the scale is enormous: a mature apple or plum tree can drop hundreds of fruit that split on impact and start fermenting where they lie. Every one of those is an open feeding and egg-laying site, and with a female laying up to 400–500 eggs and a whole generation taking only 8–10 days in warm weather, a garden can support many thousands of flies at once. Those flies do not respect your walls. On a warm afternoon they drift toward the cooking smells, ripening fruit and food odours leaking from the house, and slip inside through an open door, an unscreened window or a gap around a vent. The outdoor breeding sites to check
Some parts of a garden produce far more flies than others. These are the ones worth a walk-around.
- Windfall fruit. Apples, pears, plums and figs on the ground under a tree are the biggest single source — split, warm and fermenting.
- Overripe fruit still on the plant. A forgotten row of tomatoes, a glut of berries or grapes left to burst on the vine feeds flies just as well as fallen fruit.
- The compost heap or bin. An open pile with exposed fruit and veg scraps on top is a purpose-built nursery. Managing it is covered in fruit flies in the compost bin.

A word on the garden's other fruit fly
Not every fruit fly in the garden is the harmless kitchen kind. A close relative, the spotted-wing drosophila, is a genuine crop pest: unlike the common species, which needs fruit that is already soft and rotting, it uses a serrated egg-laying blade to cut into firm, ripening and even fresh fruit still on the plant, damaging berries and stone fruit before you harvest them. Garden hygiene that shuts the supply off
You cannot trap your way out of an outdoor population — it is simply too large and too spread out. The answer is sanitation: take away the fermenting material faster than the flies can use it. In a garden that means a routine, especially through the late-summer and autumn peak.
- Pick up windfalls regularly. Rake or gather fallen fruit every few days in season, not once a month. The longer it lies, the more flies it raises.
- Harvest on time. Pick fruit and vegetables as they ripen instead of leaving a glut to burst. Bring the ripe ones in and refrigerate what you cannot eat straight away, following how to store fruit.
- Dispose of it properly. Bag heavily rotted fruit and put it in a lidded bin, or bury it deep in an actively managed compost heap. Do not leave a pile of spoiled fruit "for the birds" right by the house.
- Manage the compost. Keep a working heap turned and covered, and always bury fresh fruit and veg scraps under a layer of dry, brown material rather than leaving them exposed on top.
- Move the reservoir away from the house. Site compost bins, wheelie bins and any fruit-waste pile as far from doors and windows as you practically can, so the flies that do breed are not right at the entry point.
Why this works: Fewer fermenting sites outdoors means a smaller outdoor population, which means far fewer flies drifting in. Sanitation shrinks the source at scale in a way traps never can.
Blocking the route indoors
Cutting the garden source is the main event, but a few defences at the boundary stop the survivors coming in. Fit or repair fly screens on windows and doors you like to leave open, especially in the kitchen. Keep doors shut on still, warm evenings when flies are most active, and do not leave ripe fruit sitting out on the counter as an indoor beacon calling them in — the routine for that is in kitchen habits that help.
