A different fly with a nasty tool
The fruit fly you meet indoors is almost always the common vinegar fly, Drosophila melanogaster, which only lays eggs in fruit that is already overripe, split or rotting. How to identify spotted wing drosophila
Identification is easiest with the males, which give the species its common name.
- Males: a single, distinct dark spot near the outer tip of each wing — visible with a hand lens, sometimes the naked eye.
- Females: no wing spots, but a stout, dark, saw-toothed ovipositor at the tail end (needs magnification to see clearly).
- Body: 2–3 mm, tan to yellow-brown, bright red eyes — very similar to the common fruit fly at a glance.
- Setting: found outdoors around ripening soft fruit, not just over kitchen scraps.

Why it damages fruit that other fruit flies leave alone
The ordinary vinegar fly needs a wound or soft, fermenting spot to lay in — it cannot open intact skin. SWD females saw a slit into healthy, ripening fruit and lay eggs just under the surface. The larvae then feed inside, causing the flesh to soften, collapse and rot from within, and the puncture wounds open the door to secondary moulds and bacteria. Where it came from, and when it strikes
Spotted wing drosophila is native to eastern and south-east Asia. It was detected in mainland North America around 2008 and in Europe soon after, and has since become established across large parts of both continents. Its success comes from the same traits that make all fruit flies formidable: a very short generation time, high egg output, and the ability of adults to overwinter in sheltered spots and re-emerge when fruit ripens. Managing it in a home garden
Home gardeners cannot eradicate SWD, but sensible hygiene keeps numbers down and protects the crop you care about.
- Harvest early and often. Pick fruit as soon as it ripens; don't leave it on the plant to soften, which is exactly when SWD lays.
- Clear fallen and over-ripe fruit. Windfalls and mushy berries are breeding factories — remove them promptly rather than leaving them on the ground.

Should you worry about it in the kitchen?
Largely, no. Indoors, the fly hovering over your bananas is almost certainly the ordinary vinegar fly, and even if a few SWD ride in on garden fruit, they behave like any other kitchen fruit fly once inside — attracted to fermentation, not laying in your firm produce on the counter.
