Barely half a millimetre long and tucked into the skin of rotting fruit or the film of a drain, fruit fly eggs are the hidden engine of the problem — and knowing what they are, where they go and why they are so hard to spot points you straight at the breeding sites that actually matter. What a fruit fly egg looks like
A single fruit fly egg is a minute, glossy, white-to-cream oval, roughly half a millimetre long — about the size of a speck of dust. Its most characteristic feature is a pair of slender filaments projecting from one end. These act as breathing tubes, or snorkels: because the egg is laid in wet, semi-liquid, fermenting food, the filaments keep its air supply above the surface so the embryo doesn't drown. You would need a magnifying glass and good light to make out an individual egg, and even then they blend into the pulpy surface they sit on. Where fruit flies lay their eggs
Females choose their egg sites with a single priority: the newly hatched larvae must be able to eat immediately. So eggs go directly onto or just under the surface of moist, fermenting, microbe-rich material. In a home that means:
- Bruised, split or overripe fruit and vegetables
- The organic gel and film lining drains and garbage disposals
- Sticky residue in recycling — bottles, cans, jars
- Damp, food-soiled sponges, mops and dishcloths
- Trash, compost caddies and spilled sugary liquid

Why you almost never see the eggs
Three things conspire to keep the eggs invisible. They are extremely small; they are laid inside or beneath the surface of food that is already discoloured and mushy; and they hatch fast, often within a day, so the window to spot them is brief. In practice, hunting for individual eggs is a waste of effort. Instead of looking for the eggs, look for the conditions that attract egg-laying — the fermenting food and moist residue — and treat those. The clue you actually notice is usually the adults hovering, or later the larvae, not the eggs themselves.
Caution: Because eggs hatch so quickly and larvae feed hidden inside food, an infestation is well underway by the time you see flies. Speed matters — don't wait.
Eggs versus what you actually notice
In practice, most people never identify the eggs at all and instead spot one of two later signs. The first is the adults themselves — the hovering cloud that announces the problem. The second, if you cut into affected fruit or look closely at a mushy patch, is the larvae: tiny, pale, legless maggots wriggling in the soft flesh. Those larvae are the eggs' offspring, already feeding. Seeing them can be unsettling, but it is also useful information, because it confirms exactly where the breeding is happening and tells you precisely what to remove. Just how many eggs are we talking about?
The numbers are the reason a couple of flies becomes a swarm. A single female can lay up to around 400 to 500 eggs across her roughly two-week life, in batches on suitable food. Each of those, given warmth, can reach breeding adulthood in only about a week or so, and then start laying too. What to do about the eggs
You cannot pick eggs off one by one, but you can destroy them wholesale by removing and cleaning the material they are laid in.
- Bin the source. Throw out overripe and rotting produce in a sealed bag, and take it outside — this removes the eggs with the food.
- Scrub the residue. Wash surfaces, wipe up spills and clean recycling so no fermenting film remains for laying.
- Clear the drains. Brush and flush drains and disposals where eggs and larvae hide in the biofilm.
- Deny new sites. Refrigerate ripe fruit and keep the kitchen dry so females have nowhere fresh to lay.

Are fruit fly eggs a health worry?
Understandably, people worry about eating eggs hidden in fruit. In reality fruit flies are a nuisance rather than a serious health threat, and fruit that has hosted a few is generally fine once washed and trimmed; genuinely rotten fruit should simply be discarded.
