Why fermenting drinks pull flies so hard

Can fruit flies actually breed in wine and beer?
Attracting adults is one thing; breeding is another, and wine and beer do both. Females will lay eggs on any moist, fermenting, sugary surface, and the dregs of a drink qualify. - Open primary fermentation. Buckets with loose lids, or must left uncovered to "wild ferment," are wide open to egg-laying. Cover with a tight lid or a fine cloth.
- Racking and bottling spills. Siphoning wine or beer inevitably drips. Sugary splashes on the floor and worktop ferment where they land.
- Trub, lees and rinse water. The yeast sludge you tip out, and the sweet rinse from cleaning equipment, are prime bait if left standing in a sink or bucket.
- Fruit additions. Adding fruit to a secondary ferment, or leaving the peels and pulp around, brings the flies in with the fruit itself.

Everyday habits that quietly feed the problem

Shutting the wine and beer source down
Because the attraction is a smell and the breeding is in residue, the fix is about denying both. Work through these steps.
- Clear the glasses now. Do not leave used wine glasses and beer bottles overnight. Rinse them the moment you are done, or at least fill them with water so the residue cannot ferment in the air.
- Seal open bottles properly. Re-cork wine firmly or use a proper stopper, and store opened bottles in the fridge where the cold suppresses both the smell and any fly development. A loosely balanced cork is not a seal.
- Rinse before recycling. Every empty bottle and can gets a few seconds under the tap before it goes in the bin, and keep that bin covered. This single habit closes the recycling nursery.
- Lock down your ferments. Top up airlocks, seat bungs and lids tightly, wipe every spill immediately, and dispose of trub and lees down a running drain rather than into a standing bucket.
